No Animal Parts, But it Costs an Arm & a Leg

Natalie Portman thinks anything that used to have hooves doesn’t belong on our feet. Now, she’s backing up her conviction with a new vegan shoe line by Te Casan. Aside from treading softly on the environment, the new shoe line will donate a startling 100% share of its profits to The Nature Conservancy, a leading environmental organization. Vegan shoes, which are free of animal products, cut down on the grazing lands for farm animals, reduce the toxic waste that seeps into our water supplies, and virtually eliminate the need for carcinogenic tanning fluids. That’s enough damage control to make my fifth grade canvas Keds look like Cinderella slippers. While Portman’s shoe line is on the pricey side, for the more fund-deficient and fashion-challenged among us, there’s always another vegan option. Just don’t expect it to be as fashionable.

Everyone likes to feel part of an exclusive clique, especially in smog-choked L.A., where the rarefied air is a bit cleaner. Thanks to BMW’s “Pioneer Program,” Ed Norton and a handful of lucky fame-magnets will gain access to the newest environmentally-sound goody bag: the BMW Hydrogen 7 roadster. Behold the ultimate schwag. Yes, take a moment to weep tears of jubilant envy and then sweet relief. This car is being hailed as “a milestone en route to an era of mobility independent of fossil fuels” and stands as a testament to what can happen when the green movement is incentivized, Hollywood style (will Google just run for President already?) When using its hydrogen cell, the BMW 7 emits nothing but water vapor and is one of our most viable alternatives to traditional gasoline-dependent vehicles. Very impressive, but I’ll wait for the built-in martini shaker before I snap up a model of my own.
