The National Mall on Inauguration Day

I'S ON K STREETLet’s get everything else out of the way. The Inauguration was definitely one of those moments that lasts a couple of lifetimes (most likely all of the Obamas’ lifetimes put together), but the world did, in fact, keep spinning. Transport ministers and reps from 22 nations met in Japan to talk about reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Abu Dhabi is investing in solar energy to the max, working on a $22 billion project to create the first settlement completely powered by renewable and without a carbon footprint. Russia’s finally sending gas to our friends in Europe again after two weeks, which I guess is good, though maybe they could have come up with some miraculous gas-free way to power themselves in that time instead.

So. The Inauguration.

I wanted to be able to write that it was a classy affair – and in many ways, it was. But even more so than that, it was utterly, completely American. Lame description, I know, but I couldn’t help but feel like it was both elegant and down-to-earth. Maybe it was President-elect Obama stumbling over the oath, or Sasha and Malia whispering to each other while Yo-Yo Ma, among others, was playing John Williams’ piece for the event. Meanwhile, Obama’s eyes were closed, head toward the sky, seemingly taking it all in. It was endearing.

And then The Speech! My God, the speech. It was 19 minutes of strength, inspiration and public-speaking lessons for all those interested. Former President Bush was staring straight ahead. Poor guy; I hope he gets a chance to relax.

So the end of an era, the beginning of another. On that sappy note, it’s time for me to go on hiatus, though the lobbyists will keep on trucking down—and probably polluting—K Street. Try to keep up with them, yeah?

You can’t go! What will I do without my weekly dose of Old White Guy Wednesday!?!?!?! Kidding! The collective IQ of this place just plummeted. We’re now a few gym classes short of a GED. Good luck, Irene!

PS: I can’t believe Carla Bruni reads beanstockd!
