Happy Chinese New Year, Beanstockd! It’s the Year of the Ox. If you were born during the Year of the Ox you possess leadership qualities, are dependable, organized, loyal, patient and responsible. You’re also apt to recycle more and be less wasteful. We made that last sentence up. Do it anyway.
Awards season is in full swing. Slumdog Millionaire continued to dominate at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Outstanding Performance by a Cast. This, after winning four Golden Globes last week. Also, Heath Ledger picked up more posthumous awards for his portrayal of the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” with the Outstanding Supporting Actor award. In addition to his Golden Globe, this win secures him as a favorite on Oscar night.
Maybe Kevin James should be picking up some hardware for having the Best Agent. “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” won once again this weekend, picking up $21.5 million, bringing its two week total to $64.8 million. The former King of Queens star has now headlined three movies (“Hitch,” “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” and “Paul Blart Mall Cop”) and they’ve all won their opening weekends with grosses of over $30 million.
Pollution at its most gruesome. Rohingyan refugees fleeing the militant nation of Burma, where they are a persecuted Muslim minority, have been arriving in western Thailand en masse over the past few months. In a brazen display of cruelty, the Thai government has been loading them back onto their rickety boats and towing them far out into the Indian Ocean. They are set adrift to eventually succumb; however, some have survived to tell their story.
The European Commission is drafting a proposal for wealthy nations to jump on the carbon trading bandwagon. Since the U.S. is clearly the Daddy Warbucks of Mother Earth, we’re the first ones they’re going to hit up. The system being set up would put a limit on the carbon emissions allowed, with overindulgent parties having to buy or trade permits as punishment for the gluttony. Hmmm….kinda sounds like the Weight Watchers point exchange program, and that worked for our obese staff writer. (Hint: his name is Bacon Bits)
