The Clotheshorse (5.29.09): Henry Holland interviews Alex Wang; Marilyn Monroe is up for Auction

Henry Holland sat down to chat with Alexander Wang. Fashion orgasm. Speaking of Wang, check out this amazing way to get some fringe benefits – just like Alex’s SS09 heeled stunners, but for only $38!
Most models aren’t content with being devastatingly beautiful, so they turn to other creative avenues. Take Lily Cole, a Brit redhead who decided acting was her next calling. Sadly, her debut role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which also happens to have been Health Ledger’s finale role, got horrific reviews at Cannes. Good thing you’re pretty, Lily!
I’m majorly crushing on this bracelet from Sid Vintage. Sid takes old pieces and reworks them into new jewels. So sustainable, so undeniably cool!
Kate Moss is writing a novel about a model that becomes an international superstar. Hmm, that story sounds awfully familiar.
Canadian model Coco Rocha pulls out all the stops for a Jean-Paul Gaultier styled editorial – girl can give supermodels a run for their money.
Check out these gorgeous sustainable wedding gowns from Puridee. I myself am far from walking down the aisle, but for brides to be, these earth-friendly dresses are perfection!
Marilyn Monroe’s clothes are going up for auction next month. Items include the white terrycloth robe she wore on her last day alive. Wonder how much Lindsay Lohan is willing to pay.
For the first time in history, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, or CFDA is giving away a Popular Vote Award. Starting today, everyone can vote for their favorite women and men’s fashion designers such as Narciso Rodriguez, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, and Alexander Wang, to name a few. The winner will be revealed on June 15 at the CFDA Fashion Awards.
One of my favorite fashion bloggers, Taghrid, was featured in the first issue of eco-conscious publication Piknik Magazine. The mag, whose entire opening issue can be seen here, seems like a pretty fab eco-resource.

Citizen Beanstockd (5.28.09): Jon and Kate Plus 8 is Ratings Gold; The Nomination of Sonia Sotomayor
Thursday May 28th 2009, 11:50 am

Sweet mother of pearl, you people just can’t get enough Jon and Kate Plus 8. So over the weekend I took in some of the J&K+8 marathon and the season five premiere and quite frankly, these two clowns are feuding for the ratings. And it worked. More people watched Monday’s premiere than watched the Lost finale. I’d also like to add that TLC just kicked MTV’s ass in the engineered reality department. Nothing MTV tried to drum up with Lauren Conrad and Jason Wahler or Justin Bobby and Audrina stacks up to Jon and Kate. As for those eight kids, whatever. At this point, no matter how messed up their lives become, they’ll be taken care of and I already know like ten people who would adopt them right now.
Barack didn’t just knock gently on the door by picking the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants to join the Supreme Court, he kicked that fucker down. By nominating Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace outgoing Supreme Court Justice David Souter, President Obama is offering our highest court the most qualified nominee possible. She is the one most capable of making the entire institution stronger. Maybe it smells a bit like identity politics, but a judge’s life factors into every decision she makes and I want someone on the bench that has lived her life. I know a lot more Americans with stories like hers than I do with stories like Chief Justice John Roberts’, which CNN’s Paul Begala described as “a mayonnaise sandwich on white bread.”
The battle is only beginning, however, and as Drizzler mentioned in her column yesterday, it threatens to create a giant rift in the Republican Party. Pretty much, they’re screwed. Latinos are the one minority group they have any real traction with, so if they choose to vigorously block Judge Sotomayor’s confirmation, they might as well change the party name to Sourgrapes Fitzcrackerman.
On a lighter note, I finally visited Citi Field, the new ballpark where my beloved Mets play here in New York. Modeled after old Ebbets Field, it’s a great place to watch a baseball game because the vertical nature of the stadium frames the game beautifully from every seat. Naturally, as I walked around checking out the new digs, I took a mental eco-inventory. I noticed the requisite signs on garbage cans asking patrons to recycle, but not a lot of recycling bins. (I have a roadie friend who tells me a lot of arenas separate trash behind the scenes.) With easy access to mass transportation, getting to and from Citi Field is also easy on the planet. One thing that differentiates Citi Field from many of it’s slightly older contemporaries is the lack of superfluous gimmicks like water fountains and ferris wheels that are just wasteful. At any rate, the Mets won, so I was happy.
Last thing, congratulations to Barcelona (the soccer team) for winning the Champions League after beating Manchester United in yesterday’s final.

Kanye West Hates Books…But Expects You to Thank Him for Writing One

Kanye West thinks he’s got a lot to offer the world. His ego is big enough to feed an entire country full of African children, but instead of giving back with food, he’s decided to give back with words. That’s right, people. Kanye has the power of words. That’s why he’s a rapper, DUH. In a recent interview, Mr. West stated that he’s “not a fan of books.” In fact, he doesn’t just hate to read—he’s proud of it. As he puts it, “I am a proud non-reader of books.”
However, he’s written a book, and he wants you to read it. We’re going to encourage you not to purchase his book, titled Thank You and You’re Welcome, because it’s not only a pointless read, but a huge waste of paper. Kanye’s “book” is 52 pages – but most of the pages only have a few words on them. One page reads, “I hate the word hate.” That’s it. What a waste of valuable resources. Kanye claims his book is “a collection of thoughts and theories.” We’d prefer he save the world some paper and keep his thoughts and theories limited to his famous online outbursts.

Vanessa Hudgens Turns Her Camera Back on The Paps

Celebs think they are so clever when they turn their cameras back on the paparazzi. Everyone’s doing it, from the ladies on The View to Jon Mayer, celebrities are loving their Flip cameras and the "irony" of being able to record the paps recording them. The latest star to embrace this new phenomenon is Vanessa Hudgens who recorded photogs in LAX as she and bf Zac Efron departed a flight from Japan on Friday. Hudgie Bear should just check out E-cycling Central and recycle that camera asap. Unless she plans to use it to take some more nekked pics…

S on K Street (5.27.09): Judge Sonia Sotomayor is President Obama’s Choice for Supreme Court
Wednesday May 27th 2009, 12:50 am

Beanstockd

Let’s get to it shall we?
This week Sonia Sotomayor was nominated to the Supreme Court. Ms. Sotomayor is a highly accomplished woman with an incredible story and (get ready for it, our we’re-totally-comfortable-with-the-ethnics media moment of the day) the first Hispanic to serve in the Supreme Court. Of course this has sent the Republican Party into a tizzy; Rush Limbaugh has already declared his distaste for her, talk of her being an "activist" is already swirling, and the usual Republican cocamamie is floating around, taking up space in the mediasphere.
The Republican party is dividing before our eyes into two groups: the cool kids and the cool kids’ embarassingly awkward cousin with tourettes. Following in the footsteps of Megan McCain, this weekend Colin Powell (cool kid) defended his Republican identity and called for expansion beyond its conservative base. Responding to an attack from who else but Rush Limbaugh (cousin) Powell suggested that moderates in the party aren’t as vocal, “because if you are vocal you’re going to get your voice mail filled up and get lots of e-mails like I did.”
This week North Korea announced the successful 2nd test of nuclear arms, defying international sanctions and blatantly clicking decline friendship request of the US. In response, Obama said the US would "stand up" to North Korea with a reaction stronger than the Bush Administration’s in 2006. The amplified response must be a result of gentle ribbing directed at Barack via Kim Jong-Il’s newly created Twitter account.
Inch a bit down and we’re in South Korea, where this year’s C40 Cities Conference took place. The conference recognizes that cities contribute 80% of the world’s greenhouse gases and represent 75% of the world’s energy consumption, and this year C40 members (Athens, Bangkok, Beijing and 37 more…) commited to transforming themselves into low carbon cities. Pack your bags, baby, we’re moving to Greece!

Britney Spears spent her Memorial Day weekend relaxing with the fam at Atlantis, Paradise Island. Brit-Brit played with her sons, Jayden James and Sean Preston, in the resort’s pools and on their water rides. It looks like Britney may finally be back on track and acting like the good mother we all knew she could be. Hopefully, at home, she uses a chemical free pool system that uses ionization technology like Ecosmartepool, it’s not only better for the environment but better for childrens’ sensitive skin too.

Tom Brady’s Boys Can Swim: Gisele Bundchen Preggers with No. 2

Watch your back Suri Cruise. If reports are true, your title as Cutest Celebri-Spawn is in major jeopardy. Radar Online claims supermodel Gisele Bundchen is knocked up with husband Tom Brady’s baby. This would be the first child for the Brazilian bombshell and the second for the quarterback, who in 2006 broke up with his baby-mama, actress Bridget Moynahan, shortly before she discovered she was pregnant. Gisele recently posed in the sustainable clothing line Loyale’s organic cotton bikini for this month’s issue of Vogue, possibly marking the last time we will see those trademark abs for a while. While I’m eager to see the world’s most perfect gene pool collide into a bouncing baby Bundchen-Brady, I think I may be more excited at the prospect of seeing the world’s most gorgeous supermodel get fat.

The Greenhorne Report (5.26.09): Susan Boyle Marches On; Carbon Emission’s Down; Foreclosure Rates Up

Happy Belated Memorial Day, Beanies! A little We time for the Beanstockd crew this weekend. You get it.
Susan Boyle, the dowdy diva who stunned the world, moved on to the next round of Britain’s Got Talent. Although this time round, she got off to a shakey start, my money’s on her going all the way.
Who’s super excited about the new CW show The Beautiful Life ? ME ME ME! Who doesn’t love super bitchy models and Marisa Cooper, especially from the same network that brought us Gossip Girl! The show starts this fall, but here’s quick look!
Ugh, more bad financial news. As an increasing number of people across the nation lose their jobs, the foreclosure rate rises as well. However, this is affecting homeowners with good credit history and prime loans. The Obama administration lauched a $75 billion program to persuade mortgage servicing companies to reduce payments, but experts worry this will only aid a small number of struggling homeowners.
Good news! The Energy Information Administration announced U.S. carbon emissions have fallen by the most since 1982. The decline is due to high oil prices and a sluggish economy.

Summer TV: Jon and Kate Plus 8 Plus Drams; The Goode Family Pokes Fun At Being Green

For those of you who are worried the only thing summer time television has to offer is Heidi and Spencer posing for the paparazzi in the middle of a rainforest, you’re in luck. This week brings the highly anticipated return of a TLC reality show, plus the premiere of a new animated comedy about a family so eco-friendly, they live by the mantra “What Would Al Gore Do?”
On Monday, May 25, catch the all new Jon & Kate Plus 8 (Divided By 2) and watch Jon, Kate (and her porcupine hair weave), duck and dash around directly addressing all of the affair rumors. If watching a family with 8 children causes your uterus to shut down like mine does, Wednesday’s offering may be more your speed. Be sure to check out the world premiere of The Goode Family on ABC. An animated series about a family so environmentally and politically correct they make all of us at Beanstockd look like Sarah Palin driving a Hummer while simultaneously clubbing baby seals.

Robert Pattinson Auctions Off a Smooch for a Cause
Tuesday May 26th 2009, 10:32 am

Beanstockd

Robert Pattinson is worth a lot of moolah these days. The famous vampire, who got his start playing Quidditch in the Harry Potter movies, recently auctioned off a kiss at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS party in Cannes. The price for a smoocheroo on the cheek, grandma style? Oh you know, just fifty-five THOUSAND DOLLARS. No big deal or anything. Granted, the kiss was for a good cause—proceeds from the event fund AIDS research, HIV prevention and treatment education.
We think we can forgive the price seeing as RPatz was doing a major good deed. More importantly, we’re curious to know who won the kiss! Apparently, two rich daddies paid $20,000 euros each for their daughters to seal the deal with a kiss. Lucky girls! Now, if we could only get Pattinson to offer his services to benefit the environment…Rob, your planet needs you!
