Josie Maran and our guinea pig Elysse

Fashionista by Ashley David - Click for more from The ClotheshorseDoes the name Josie Maran ring a bell? Probably, because the gorgeous model had a multi-year contract with Maybeline in the late 90s. Maran, who is in person just as beautiful with lightly tanned skin and eyes that legitimately sparkle, created an eco-friendly cosmetics line in 2007. On Thursday, I caught up with her at the Sephora in Times Square for a chat and some makeup tips.

With my friend in tow as a makeup guinea pig, I snagged a short and super informal interview with Josie herself while the makeup artist worked natural wonders on my volunteer. Josie, who runs the makeup line with only two others, and who has a say on every step of the process, was personable and intelligent, answering my questions and explaining her passion for good looking makeup that was good for the earth.

She spoke of her days in the fashion indstury, and said that while she loved the way she looked with makeup, she hated that it wasn’t natural. Enter her own vision, born slightly after Maran gave birth to her first child—having saved all of her favorite makeup from her modeling days, she set out to recreate those products in a sustainable fashion.

The result? The Josie Maran Cosmetics collection, which as of now is comprised of “85 SKUs.” Maran hopes to expand to skin care and hair care, but for now, she’s focusing on a cosmetics brand which is sustainable right down to it’s packaging. Seriously—that eye shadow compact? You could bury it in your backyard, and thirty days later, it would be gone. Biodegradable, baby!

As you can see above, the makeup is light, fresh, and beautiful. I spoke to Josie about snagging a few products to try out myself, and you can rest assured that once I have my hands on them, I’ll be reporting back. I will say that my makeup guinea pig’s face was postively glowing upon completion. As Josie says, it’s “chicological!” Can’t argue with that.
