Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about Ralph Lauren’s photoshop crisis. 23-year-old model Filippa Hamilton was photoshopped into an emaciated nightmare. And this was after the brand had fired her for being too fat. Of course, that’s not what Ralph Lauren said. They claimed she failed to meet her contract. Hamilton says it was because at 5’8” and 120 lbs., she was too big for them. Obviously, the solution is to morph her into that alien looking thing at left (or the one at right, for that matter).
I don’t know if there’s something in the water, but recently, I’ve been coming across so many incredible eco-designers. This week it’s Doucette Duvall, the brainchild of Stephanie Doucette and Annebet Duvall. The line uses pre-existing fabric and trim, shuns garment bags, and ships in recycled boxes only. I’m thinking their Mer dress has Selena Gomez’s name on it.
Speaking of anorexics, the Olsen twins are adding a line of sunglasses to their empire. You know, because they aren’t rich enough already. The twins have already been inducted into the CFDA. What more could they want?
While the Olsens were showing off their boyfriends in the City of Love last week, eco-designers were showing off their sustainable wares during Paris Fashion Week’s Green Showroom series of events. As a testament to how far sustainable fashion has come, PFW dedicated a series of events to designers that blend ecological mindsets and materials with well designed clothes.
One of the gems who showed at the events above? Designer Andrea Kluesener. She’s a trained dressmaker who studied at London’s Central Saint Martins, and has collaborations with Alexander McQueen and Chloe under her belt. For Spring 2010, Kluesener’s draping and knotting techniques gave way to a collection of dresses in a muted seaside palate.
Season two of The Rachel Zoe Project came to a close Monday night. Rachel, per usual, was bananas, this time because she was busy styling a shoot for V Magazine with Jessica Stam. Meanwhile, I was too busy staring at Brad’s short shorts (not okay) and laughing at RZ’s newest catch phrase, “shhhuuuttt” (an abbreviation for “shut up”, obvi). Catch up on your missed RZP here.
Karl Lagerfeld hates fat people. Are you surprised? Karl told Focus magazine, “Nobody wants to see curvy girls.” Don’t expect to see any big girls walking down his runway; Sir Karl believes that honor is reserved for pin thin ladies who fit the fashionable ideals of “dreams and illusions.”
Eco goddess Stella McCartney’s done a children’s line for GAP, and (surprise surprise), the pieces for wee ones are just as fantastic as the pieces for us regular folk. W got a sneak peek at Stella’s North London shoot for the line. Stella spoke with the magazine about her low price points, the need for good-looking kid’s clothing, and her idea of artistic advisors (Ungaro, take note): children.
Kanye West’s Pastelle line was once a beacon of light in a world of celebrity fashion. Now, my dreams of owning some kickass Kanye kicks have been thrown overboard. West, who spent a year coming up with a belt, some t-shirts and a few other items, has decided to can his dreams of being a designer. What, those internships didn’t work out?
I’m disappointed to admit that I’m missing Portland Fashion Week, which is touted as the all-sustainable week of fashion and products. Thankfully, Ecouterre is bringing us the updates. My personal favorites include Anna Cohen’s Imperial Collection (the Oregonian designer uses locally sourced sustainable wool) and Ethos Paris’ line of sustainable men’s separates. It’s harder to find eco-fashion for gents, but this line does the trick!
That’s right, they went there. Steven Klein shot Lara Stone in blackface makeup for French Vogue’s Supermodel issue, styled by Carine Roitfeld. The peanut gallery is torn: is this oppression or social commentary? And also, the magazine praises Stone for being the “radical break from anorexic models.” Stone hates being the “fat one” and is a size 4.
Images of Carlos Falchi’s faux-skin line for Target are trickling out. It appears we’re in for cross body bags in blues and greens. For $24.99, can we really complain that the faux-skin looks like a bad Forever21 piece?
Images of the Rodarte for Target collection are slowly leaking into the blogosphere. So far, we’ve got a sequin dress with ribcage detailing and a leopard coat. The collection, which hits stores December 20th, will feature 55 pieces and will retail from $9.99 to $79.99.
