The Greenhorne Report (11.30.09): Reese Witherspoon & Jake Gyllenhaal Deny Split; Susan Boyle Tops UK Charts

Bad guys go good? Paper company Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) is responsible for much of Indonesia's deforestation. Yet the company offered up an eco-friendly solution to curb carbon emissions from Indonesia's peat bogs. APRIL wants to build a ring of tree plantations around the bogs to curtail greenhouse gas emissions. They also want to receive carbon credits from the United Nations for their action. However, environmental groups don't think it's fair to reward paper and pulp companies like that, because the companies caused so much of the damage and deforestation already done.
A gunman shot four police officers Sunday morning. The three officers were drinking coffee in a coffee shop owned by a former cop when a man dressed in black walked in and killed all four. The motive, and perpetrator remain unknown.
Although People magazine reported that Reese Witherspoon was a victim of turkey drop (a post-Thanksgiving dumping), they may have gotten their facts wrong. Reese and Jake Gyllenhaal's representatives both claim that everything is hunky-dory between the pair. Perhaps it was just a bad case of food-poisoning, or a prying Aunt Fanny.
The newest baby Klum is revealed! Supermodel Heidi Klum, and her husband, the single-monikered Seal, posted pictures of their latest model. The two proud parents put up family pictures featuring their new baby, Lou Sulola, on their respective websites. Aw, she's so cute!
Good girls finish first. British singing sensation Susan Boyle's debut album went straight to number one. Boyle came in second on the UK reality TV show, Britain's Got Talent, but her record has the largest first week sales in UK chart history and is the fastest selling album of the year. Not bad.

Elin Nordegren Will Hit a B*#%h: Tiger Woods’ Wife Goes on the Attack After Cheating Rumors Surface

As sports scandals go, “Tiger-gate” tops our list – if only for the endless golf-related puns. So let’s get swinging, shall we? Friday, on the heels of rumors that Tiger Woods cheated on his wife with professional homewrecker, Rachel Uchitel, (the woman sleeping with actor David Boreanaz, while his wife was pregnant), Woods was in a serious car accident. Details first emerged that following an argument with his wife, Elin Nordegren, Tiger drove into a fire hydrant and tree outside of his Florida mansion. Reps for Tiger claimed that Elin smashed the car windows to help get her husband out of the wreckage. However, it didn’t take long for people to realize that Tiger’s camp was full of more B.S. than compost on a cow farm. A little birdie confirmed that Nordegren didn’t break the windows to save her hubby, but instead was attacking him. Elin allegedly freaked out after reading reports that her husband was putting his ace in some other woman’s hole. Tiger then got into his car and that’s when Elin took a driver to the driver.
In honor of Elin Nordegren and jilted women everywhere, here’s a clip of from the television show Glee!, featuring a popular Jazmine Sullivan song. And you thought Tiger could swing a club.

The Clotheshorse (11.30.09): Thanksgiving Week Recap

Well, beanies, the holiday season hath finally come. Forget Kate Moss’ “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” motto – this is the time to stuff your face with delicious turkey/tofurkey/whatever it is you eat on Thanksgiving. For me, it was my grandma’s sweet potatoes topped with toasted marshmallows. Here’s what you missed while you were in a food coma:
On The City, Whitney Port received her first samples! Twas a big deal – Whitney, ever the expressionless not so bright crayon, hired Roxy to do her casting. Bad idea – Whitney asked for a fairy tale tea party, Roxy gave her goth. When will Whitney learn? Kelly Cutrone knows best.
H&M released their winter ad campaign, which is full of cozy knits and all black outfits, with a few sequins peppered in for good measure. Perfect, in short, for meeting the parents at Christmas.
Speaking of Christmas, if you’re looking for holiday gifts, might I suggest Christine Mighion’s gorgeous eco-friendly jewelry? I’m a bit obsessed – these are perfect stocking stuffers.
Indochine and its famous banana wallpaper celebrated their 25th birthday, and a whole slew of stylish stunners came out to celebrate. Fashionista was on hand for the soiree, and they’ve got all the deets.
Looking to upcycle that old leather jacket your dad has been hiding in his closet for years? Go the route of reMade USA – they take leather jackets and rework them into covetable handbags. They even show you how to make your own on their website.
Eugenia Kim and Cynthia Vincent will be collaborating with Target. Expect adorable hats and perfect flats in your future. Add on Rodarte for Target and I’m smitten. Target, will you marry me?
Looking for a winter coat? So am I, but I may just have met my match in Vaute Couture’s vegan offerings. The coats are made of weather-resistant Polartec fabric as well as Teijin’s Recycled Closed Loop Zero Waste Satin Ripstop. They’re 100% recyclable, 100% warm, and 100% thoughtful (the company puts sustainability and animal rights at the top of their list).
The Guardian UK did a writeup of all their favorite style bloggers. My personal favorite, Karla Deras of Karla’s Closet, made the cut.
Leighton Meester Christmas Single on iTunes

Ready or not, the holidays are in full swing. The evidence is everywhere, in the new Christmas music (like Leighton Meester's rendition of “Christmas Baby, Please Come Home“), the Black Friday flyers and the faces of frazzled shoppers. But don't worry, by cutting holiday waste, you can also cut the holiday stress. According to the EPA, household waste jumps 25% between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. So, instead of just wadding up that wrapping paper and throwing out the leftovers, make a few simple changes that will help reduce the waste and make your life way easier. Like, instead of wasting money on wrapping paper, you can go old school and use newspapers, magazines or old maps to wrap gifts. You can also lead by example by not using plastic utensils, plates or cups when entertaining. And when the festivities are over, pack each guest a doggy bag of leftovers rather than throwing them out. Finally, buy those Christmas tunes via digital download, rather than purchasing a CD. You can even get Leighton's new song now on iTunes as part of the collection, "A Very Special Christmas 7".

NBC Refused to Run PETA Ad During Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Even though NBC’s parent company, Universal, just wrapped their “Green Is Universal” week, which included a serenade by Jimmy Fallon and shout out to bicyclists on Mercy, the network decided not to run one of PETA’s ads during the Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade. The network claims that they want to see proof of the ads’ claims about the poor conditions in factory farms even though the topic has been well documented in everything from The New York Times to The Oprah Winfrey Show. Without proper “proof” NBC decided "this commercial does not meet NBC Universal standards" and refused to run it.

Jersey Shore Shows What’s Really Dirty About New Jersey

The greatest unsolved mystery in the world is not the disappearance of Amelia Earhart or even what’s up with Fergie’s face. The preview of MTV’s newest reality show Jersey Shore confirms that the ultimate question mark of our generation, is none other than New Jersey. Why is it that so many residents of the Garden State are plagued with big hair, bad clothes, and burnt skin? Well, according to Money magazine, one possible explanation can be crossed of the list: It’s not something in the air. In the publication’s "Best Places to Live" list, N.J. had nine out the top ten cities listed in the "cleanest air" category. Just when we were ready to pen President Obama a letter asking him to remove these over gel-ed, Ed Hardy wearing, tanorexic tools from the Union, it seems our fist pumping friends have proven us wrong. Now, where can we sign the petition to get rid of Texas?

The Greenhorne Report (11.23.09): New Moon Has Best Opening Week, Jude Law Stalked by NYU Freshmen
Monday November 23rd 2009, 8:02 pm

Beanstockd

One of the biggest environmental problems facing cities today comes from untreated waste overflowing the sewer systems and poisoning waterways. Many cities' water treatment plants repeatedly violate the Clean Water Act. As cities expand, they chop down trees and build over soil, taking away the land's ability to absorb water. During heavy rains, the rainwater overwhelms the sewage system, instead of being absorbed by the ground.
No surprises here: New Moon was the biggest movie opener last week, surpassing Twilight's success. It had the third largest opening (only behind Spiderman and The Dark Knight, and will be the cheapest movie to make more than $200 million.
People were falling all over themselves at the American Music Awards Sunday night. J.Lo took a spill and Adam Lambert fell down a flight of stairs. Taylor Swift won an award, and she wasn't even there! The singer gave her acceptance speech via satellite from London. Michael Jackson, the other big winner of the evening also was not there, for obvious reasons.
So NYU students are kind of creepy and stalker-ish. You'd think that with the cast of Gossip Girl filming around them all the time, they'd get used to seeing famous people. However the freshman aren't used to it quite yet. Jude Law bought an apartment next to a freshman dorm and has been plagued by amateur first year paparrazzi snapping pics every time he steps outside.
The alleged Fort Hood shooter, Nidal Malik Hassan, is paralyzed from the chest down, and doctors believe it will be permanent. Nassan has been recovering from gunshot wounds at the Brooke Army Medical Center, and is in confinement until his court-martial date.
Lady Gaga Recycles Bones for Her American Music Awards Costume

Every day is Halloween for Lady Gaga, which is one of the reasons we’re obsessed with her. Miley may dress like a hooker, but let’s face it, that costume is tired. Gaga, on the other hand, keeps coming up with new ideas. The lady pioneered the no-pants look, which is a great way to save money and resources. However, we really have to commend her for what she did last night. Sister recycled a skeleton instead of purchasing an outfit for her AMA performance. Okay, so she may have splurged on the Christmas lights she replaced the bone marrow with so that she could glow on stage, but you’ve got to admit — this is a whole new kind of recycling!
She’s pretty much outshined our green efforts this week, which included purchasing biodegradable tableware for our 20+ person Thanksgiving dinner. We’re going to let her one-uppance slide, but only because we love it when our favorite celebrities do good. Her highness Gagaloo isn’t the only one saving our planet. Entourage’s resident hottie Adrien Grenier (who was recently spotted by BB!) has compiled a list of green holiday gifts. Too bad he didn’t put himself on the list. That’s one guy we’d definitely ask Santa for…

Jimmy Fallon Celebrates NBC’s Green Week With a Musical Medley

Last week, NBC television shows shared an eco-friendly theme, as the network celebrated Green Week. The highlight of this special programming was surprisingly not found on 30 Rock or Saturday Night Live (although Al Gore’s cameos on both were surprisingly less robotic than last year’s), but on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Thursday night, Jimbo reminded us why we used to scribble his name in a heart on our recycled paper notebook in high school. The comedian revisited his SNL days, playing a mix of popular songs with themed lyric changes that fit. Since Andy Samberg has yet to pen carbon-conscious lyrics to an auto tune-ed Digital Short, we’re totally taking it back to Team Fallon.

The Clotheshorse (11.20.09): Louise Goldin for Topshop; Karl Lagerfeld Launches Chanel Magazine
Friday November 20th 2009, 2:53 pm

Bloggers, beware! The industry giants have figured out that it’s time to make sense of that newfangled contraption known as the Internet. Forever21 may have jumped on the blogging bandwagon long ago, but now Barneys is following suit. Also, Karl Lagerfeld is launching a Chanel magazine.
Beanies, I spent this past week in sunny California (San Francisco, to be exact). While exploring The Haight, I came across Coco-luxe, the most darling coffee/chocolate shop. I ordered a peppermint mocha, and to my delight, received my drink in an all green cup with a paper straw. Now that is change I can believe in.
How insanely badass are these Louise Goldin for Topshop shoes? DIE. They’re Spring ’10, so it’ll be a little while before we get our hands on them. Do you hear a DIY in the distance? I do.
Ain’t nobody going to slow Lindsay Lohan down. Just because Ungaro thinks she’s sucking the soul out of his company doesn’t mean she’s going to quiet her creative vision! She’s teaming up with Pascal Mouwad – he’s the guy behind Nicole Richie’s House of Harlow line, as well as Kelly Bensimon’s “Navajo-inspired” one – to work with “a friend [of LiLo and his] at bebe.”
Brangelina designs jewelry now. They’re working with Asprey. Wonder if they’ll try and make an “adopted baby” ring? I’m thinking eco-friendly/non-conflict diamonds – with proceeds going to Africa, of course.
Daphne Guiness wore the Alexander McQueen SS10 alien shoes. She didn’t fall. Color me impressed.
Want to steal Whitney Port’s look? She wrote about her makeup routine on her blog, claiming she does her own because they don’t have a makeup artist on The City. No wonder Roxy always looks like a hot tranny mess.
Speaking of Whitney, her BFF Lauren Conrad is writing a style guide. There’s no stopping the girl! First, a NY Times bestseller, now another endeavor. LC is on fire!
Sophie Theallet took home the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award on Monday night. The prize, previously won by Alexander Wang and worth $200k, includes a year of mentoring. Personally, I was rooting for fellow greenie Natalie Chanin of Alabama Chanin to take home the gold – her reworked denim pieces are 2D4 (to die for).
Sea of Shoes’ Jane Aldridge, she of many shoes and many dollars, has come under fire for the comment she recently made. Girl’s allowed to have an opinion, but if there’s one way to sound like a snobby brat, this is certainly it. Glad to know she didn't actually drop out of school.
I’m loving Elva Fields’ line of sustainable jewels. They’re made entirely out of repurposed vintage pieces, and they’re statement jewelry at it’s best. You can buy designer Emily Wheat Maynard’s line on her website – if you’re in NYC, Albertine carries it.
Zac Posen’s doing diffusion. A diffusion line, that is. It’s called Z Spoke, and it’ll launch exclusively at Saks come spring. The price point? Way reasonable – we’re talking prices that start at $78. Sign me up!
20 year old model Daul Kim was found dead in Paris on Thursday morning. The cause of death is unknown, but The Cut suspects it was suicide. Sad.
Looking for perfect holiday gifts? These cashmere scarves are shorn from free-range goats in Mongolia and are hand-loomed in Nepal. Perfection!
Getting married? Go short in this vegan leather wedding dress. Yes, it sounds all wrong – but believe me, it’s all right.
