We heart Bob Herbert for ripping McCain a new one in this awesome New York Times editorial. For a little while McCain has been comparing himself to the last decent Republican on record, Theodore Roosevelt. What John "Drill ‘Em If You Got ‘Em" McCain doesn’t seem to realize is that Teddy altogether popularized the green movement.
But you know what? Fine. If McCain wants to be a "Theodore Roosevelt Republican," he can start by turning down all donations from oil companies. Then he can promise to protect environments with endangered species. Then he can dedicate his free time to supporting Natural History museums.
While Theodore Roosevelt was a hunter, he was also the first true green badass. And just so you know, he was also a regular, run-of-the-mill, salt-of-the-Earth, meat-and-potatoes badass.

Great post and great op-ed. I guess invoking the name of Ronald Reagan isn’t good enough anymore for the GOP. Must have something to do with all those posthumous revelations that he wasn’t a very nice person and that even his kids hated him. And let’s not forget his BRILLIANT ideas like trickle-down economics and star wars.
If McCain fancies himself a modern day Teddy Roosevelt he can start by getting back on the straight talk express he abandoned so long ago. After all, one could say Teddy Roosevelt invented the straight talk express and his face ended up on the side of a mountain. The only place McCain’s face is gonna end up is on the side of my mound of mashed potatoes.
Comment by Bacon Bits 08.21.08 @ 10:00 amif you carve mccain’s face into your mashed potatoes, i’ll make sure and mash them up once again. that’s what friends are for, right?
Comment by sarah 08.21.08 @ 10:16 amI would carve John McCain’s face into my mashed potatoes, and then pour hot gravy all of over it, just to watch his face melt away. Oh wait, I think the melanoma has already done that.
