Almost a month ago, I looked at the creative ads HBO was using to promote its new vampire show – True Blood. While the ads were quirky fun, True Blood’s pilot had a lot of dead weight. Case in point, the bloodless yawn-worthy fight scene. Our heroine, buxom Sookie (Anna Paquin) saves Vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) from having his blood drained by throwing a chain around one attacker’s neck that mysteriously won’t fall off (why can’t he just unravel the chain?) and holds the other attacker half-heartedly at knifepoint (the knife isn’t even aimed at the woman half the time). Junior high school stage combat has more tension and more fake blood packets. What is a vampire show without blood and the use of a non-toxic cleaner (to reduce toxic exposures and calls to poison control) to remove it? A dull, dieting vampire show.
Yet, as a fan of Charlaine Harris’ books (upon which the television show is based), I want the show to succeed. So, I’ll be tuning in this weekend, again, with the hopes that they’ve hired a new stunt coordinator. (Based on the flurry of activity over at Entertainment Weekly, a lot of other people are hoping too.) Personally, I’d like there to be blood. Alan Ball needs to get these critters off their diet and have them enjoy their all-natural, organic food supply. It’ll inject some life into the series. (And, I’m sure Mrs. Meyer’s Stain Remover would enjoy the sales.)

My sympathy for the person so impaired that he can’t recognize brilliance when he sees it. If you haven’t read the books, this is still a fun show. If you have read them, this premier was brilliant. I have never been so impressed with casting, and pleased with a tv translation from book form.
Yes, they did up the sex and tweak a few points to work better in visual media, but I am in awe of Anna Paquin’s performance of Sookie, and the chemistry between Sookie and Bill is nothing short of amazing.
As for our friends desire for blood, they only got up to page 44 in the book. I expect blood to be forthcoming. I encourage everyone to watch and judge for themselves.
I actually kind of like True Blood –it’s entertaining to watch for sure..
Comment by sandra 09.14.08 @ 4:24 pmI thought that they did a great job of conveying the unique attraction between Sookie and Bill. I read the books when they first came out and found them hard to put down, and just like the books, I find it disappointing every time the show ends. I think everyone should watch it and you may just change your mind about vampires (and the show).
