The Clotheshorse (9.16.08): Fashion Week in New York

Vena Cava

As the late fashionista Nan Kempner once said, “Frankly, I couldn’t go mail a letter if I didn’t feel I looked all right.” We couldn’t agree more. Meet Sarah, Beanstockd’s resident clotheshorse and discerning shopper. Whether it’s a work function or the walk of shame, she’s here to keep you looking your best. Because as Nan also said: “The best part of a party is getting dressed to go.”

It might be over, but I’ll keep the fashion news coming and I promise to update you on things more important than “Who wore it better?” and “Hot or not?” Best of all, I’ll give you the DL on green fashion, from couture to consignment.

The Spring ‘09 collections began showing amid the terror of Hurricane Hanna, but doled out some much needed happiness. Our favorites? Brooklyn-based Vena Cava, the always effortless Alexander Wang, and party perfection BCBG. Lilo was spotted front row with Samantha at the Charlotte Ronson show (looking dapper, might we add). Agyness Deyn was seen biking down 7th Ave, and Soho has turned into model central. Heavenly!

TopShop’s NYC opening has been pushed back…again. We can’t buy in person from the Brit retailer until November. Sadness. However, TopShop’s US website just launched on September 9th and we think this might be an even better alternative than fighting model-y looking women in fierce stilettos on opening day.

Pictures have surfaced for Jonathan Saunders diffusion line at Target, and we’ve got our eyes on a Mondrian-inspired mini dress that goes for (gasp!) under twenty bucks. Worried about polluting the Earth with fast fashion? Rest assured, Target’s on top of it. They’re LEED certified, and recycle cardboard, trash, and even leftover merchandise (and they did that wonderful collaboration with Rogan, one of our fave green retailers!)

Also on September 9th: Rachel Zoe’s new show premiered on Bravo. While we don’t love Rachel’s raisin-esque face, we do love her style. See you there, Nicole Richie!

If you’re still not feeling fast fashion, try Gorman, an organic clothing line from Australia. The line’s been an Aussie favorite for years, and goes beyond typical organic basics to include colorful skirts and fanciful dresses. The best part? They’ve finally agreed to ship to the US! Gorman’s line is made from certified organic cotton grown in Thailand, but these ain’t your hippie BFF’s chunky threads. The line’s legitimately fashionable (think even better than hipster staple American Apparel) and we can’t wait to wear it.

If ordering a dress from the other side of the world has your eco-panties in a bunch, try Elisa Jimenez. Remember her from Project Runway 4? She’s based in New York and Santa Fe and she’s big into natural fibers like bamboo, soy, and even corn. She has a few frocks, t-shirts and made to order options available online, but stay tuned…
