The Review: Proposition 8 Musical Rocks the Web

Funnyordie.com has gotten even more political with it’s Proposition 8 Musical. It’s staged as a low-budget community theatre production with the Proposition 8’s detractors (LGBT people and allies) sing-arguing with the conservatives (lead by John C. Reilly and Allison Janney) who promote it. The group’s sing-song bickering is mediated by Jesus (played by Jack Black) who points out that there are many things the Bible condemns that the conservatives do (like indulge in shrimp cocktails). In the end, Neil Patrick Harris proposes that gay marriage should be allowed on the grounds that it will solve the economic crisis. Amidst a flurry of jazz hands, both sides forget their differences as they sing about the saving of the economy.

It’s nice to see that political advocation can be funny. While writing letters to congressional representatives with eco-friendly, recycled, biodegradable pens is one way to get political attention, forwarding the video on to friends, relatives, and representatives is a slightly more fun way. It doesn’t necessarily matter that Jack Black actually talks along to the music instead of singing or that Neil Patrick Harris’ choreography is horribly dorky because watching Allison Janney mime sodomizing John C. Reilly is well worth a view. Though it’s totally cheesey, it’s also totally fun.
