Okay, so the term is officially known as greenwashing (or “green-sheening,” which has an absolutely wonderful ring!) Wikipedia says the term’s used when a much larger amount of time or money has been spent on advertising a company’s greenness rather than actually forking over the dough on practices that help the earth. According to Terra Choice, there are 6 main greenwashing issues (Wikipedia goes into some detail about them, but we’ll just name them here): sin of the hidden trade, sin of no proof, sin of vagueness, sin of irrelevance, sin of fibbing, and the sin of lesser of two evils, or relativism.
Cars that claim to be green are a big one to watch out for. As Norway’s Bente Oeverli says, “Cars cannot do anything good for the environment except less damage than others” (take that, “green” SUVs and your JailBait drivers!)
Our job as consumers? Be suspicious. Do some research. Companies are not honest.
Here’s a great site where people rank environmental ads. Here’s another one providing some useful heads-up.
