I need to disagree with you. Ethanol is positioned as the dream alternative fuel but it actually contains less energy than gasoline, is way more expensive and still causes damage to the environment. How? The nitrogen based fertilizer used to grow corn and sugar more than often seeps into major water sources and adds to pollution levels. All in all we can’t be sure that ethanol is all that it’s cracked up to be — the only good thing about it is that it’s not oil.

You can not argue that sugar cane ethanol is at least a step in the right direction. Sugar cane ethanol is much cleaner and easier to produce than corn ethanol.

It is less expensive to produce than corn ethanol because it doesn’t need to make the transformation from carbohydrates to sugar, which is then fermented to make ethanol.

Also, you can not argue that it is not at least cleaner than oil production. My feeling is that at least sugar cane ethanol is more environmentally friendly than either oil or corn ethanol. As we learn more about it, hopfully over time, the technology will improve to allow us to produce it in a cleaner way.

The only reason we do not see more sugar cane ethanol around is because the corn and oil lobbyists in this country have put up such a fuss, that we imposed a 7% import tariff on any foreign ethanol. That is outrageous.

On a personal note, I’d much rather depend on the people of Brazil for energy than the middle east. Just sayin!
